description: The Water Management Zones together with Sub-zones form the underpinning geographical units to support the policy framework for surface water allocation, surface water quality and activities in the beds of rivers and lakes, as outlined inthe One plan (Schedule A, B, C, & E). A range of criteria were applied to derive the water management zones and their subsequent sub-zones. These criteria included but were not limited to National Water Conservation Orders, Local Water Conservation Notices, ecosystem types, geology, hydrology, resource pressures, location of monitoring sites and the length and availability of monitoring data (both flow and water quality). The sub-zones were delineated using the River Environment Classification (NIWA) and the Utility Network Analyst tool in ArcGIS.Forty-four water management zones and 124 sub-zones have been defined across the Manawatu-Wanganui Region.Using water management zones and sub-zones was the first step towards policy development for integrated catchment management of natural resources in the Manawatu-Wanganui Region.
